2015 Audi A4 Saloon Review

Same as ever, only better, Audi’s new A4 is predictably good.

Once a byword for predictability, Audi has raised its game with the current A4. It’s more than just a nice interior and smart exterior style; there’s more space and even some driver appeal, too. All of which makes it more appealing against its long-standing BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class rivals.

What is it?
The Audi A4 and its German rivals - the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class - have absolutely decimated the traditional family car market. Replaced in 2015 the A4 is bigger, more comfortable and better driving than ever before. Unsurprisingly, given its sales, Audi’s been a bit conservative on the styling, but it’s still a handsome looker. Low potential ownership costs - thanks to both its efficiency and strong resale values - make it a wise buy, too.

What is it like?
Like a family car, only far more desirable. Sit in the A4 and you'll realise that the cabin is a thing of beauty, while the space has massively improved - those rear seats now offer some legroom. Audi offers it with a variety of engines and front- or four-wheel drive, but the 150hp 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine makes up the bulk of sales. For good reason too, as it’s a proven unit, with excellent economy and emissions (99g/km in manual, Attraction trim).

Carzone verdict: 4.5/5
An entirely predictable new A4 from Audi, though one that customers will welcome. Along with more equipment and connectivity, improved safety, a finer ride, greater space and revised rather than revolutionary styling, the A4 does everything else you’d want, only better than before. Better economy, lower emissions, a cabin that wouldn’t look out of place in a car double the price and competitive pricing. That it now drives with some more verve hardly matters. A very desirable car indeed.
