Hi Emma,

Hyundais are typically reliable machines and the i40 is no exception – and, at just five years old, it should only have just come out of manufacturer warranty, so there’s no excuse for previous owners cutting corners with it. Therefore, you might want to note any trim rattles and squeaks in the interior, if it’s higher-than-average mileage and – assuming it’s the 1.7 CRDi – then you want to watch for any turbo-related issues (white or blue smoke on cold start-up or during hard acceleration). Also, the i40 had a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and, if it has been used on short, start-stop journeys by previous owners, there’s a chance this might clog up – causing an expensive repair bill. Ideally, the i40 needs to have been regularly used on motorways to ensure its DPF is operating well, so a higher-mileage car might be a safer one to go for, as higher miles typically indicates motorway use.
