Ford Focus preview

What's this?

This is the revamped Ford Focus, which will arrive in Ireland in 2022. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but Ford has shown us what the new model will look like and what sort of tech we can expect to find inside. As you can see, it’s an evolution of the current model rather than an all-new car, but it still gets a fresh grille and slimline headlights to mark it out as the updated version. Inside, there’s an enormous new touchscreen using Ford’s latest infotainment system and the capacity for over-the-air updates. As before, there’s a choice of hatchback and estate models, as well as a wide range of trim levels.

What will its rivals be?

It might have a new face, but the Focus has to fight the same battles. It’s still up against the ever-popular Volkswagen Golf and the Toyota Corolla, but it’s also competing with the next-generation Vauxhall Astra and Peugeot 308. Other rivals include the Kia Ceed, the Renault Megane and the SEAT Leon, as well as more premium alternatives such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, BMW 1 Series and Audi A3. And that’s before we look at the wealth of family SUVs that are also competing for buyers’ affection.

Any tech info?

The big news is the arrival of a new 13.4-inch touchscreen, which now crowns the Focus dashboard. It uses Ford’s SYNC4 infotainment technology, giving it internet connectivity and the ability to update itself without the need to visit a dealer. It also works with the FordPass app to check fuel levels, oil life and even start the car remotely. Aside from that, you can have a range of safety gadgets, including a forward-facing camera safety system that helps prevent you from turning across oncoming traffic at a junction.

What will the range be like?

The range will be similar to that of the outgoing Focus, with a choice of hatchback and estate bodies, plus a plethora of trim levels. These will include some now long-standing favourites, including the sporty-looking ST-Line, the SUV-inspired Active versions and the high-performance ST model. The engine range is also similar, but there are now two 1.0-litre EcoBoost mild-hybrid engines on offer.

Expectations?

The current Focus is popular with customers, and there are very good reasons for that. By making only minor changes, Ford has modernised its family hatchback without running the risk of ruining it. With these fresh updates adding modern looks and the latest technology, the new Focus should be every bit as good as its predecessor.
